Change of Licensing for MIRENA Coil

Posted on:

Please note that the FRSH has changed its licensing for MIRENA COILS in Jan 24.

The Mirena® 52mg LNG-IUD has now been licensed for 8 years for contraception. (This is the standard Mirena coil used in our surgery).

This means that for those aged less than 45 years when their Mirena was inserted – for the purposes of contraception only – can now have an extension of 3 years before requiring replacement (total of 8 years).

For those aged 45 or above at the time of insertion, the licence for contraception is unchanged and the coil can remain in place till age 55 years.

There has not been an extension to the licensed duration of use when being used for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding, or for endometrial protection as part of hormone replacement therapy.

If you have concerns or questions related to this, please discuss with Dr Allison.
